LiqMetCraft Hands-on Workshop

The Kowloon Interaction Design Center (KLIC) held a hands-on session this morning (March 23) at 10:00 AM in M4003 (Level 4, CMC), featuring the LiqMetCraft toolkit.

LiqMetCraft is a toolkit for creating electronics-embedded papercrafts through an integrated process of cutting and folding. Unlike conventional approaches where crafting and circuit construction are separate, LiqMetCraft enables users to form both the physical structure and circuit traces simultaneously. This is made possible by using liquid-metal-dyed paper-like fabric, which becomes conductive under pressure from cutting and folding, while unpressed areas remain insulated.

During the session, participants were introduced to the toolkit and its design approach, which combines software interfaces for papercraft design with physical materials for prototyping. The workshop included a demonstration, followed by hands-on activities where attendees created paper circuits using the materials.

The toolkit, developed by Qi Zhang, Shuwen Jiang, Zeshui Li, and Kening Zhu, will be presented at CHI. The session provided participants with an opportunity to explore an alternative workflow for prototyping interactive paper-based designs.

This session is part of KLIC’s bi-weekly activities, which focus on hands-on learning and the exploration of emerging tools and methods in Human–Computer Interaction.
